Digital Realty manages over 145 sites across the globe that encompass almost 24 million square feet of data center properties. Their most impressive site is a 1.1 million square foot Lakeside Technology Center located in Chicago on 350 East Cermak, ranks #9 on the World’s Biggest Top Ten. Built in multiple stages starting in 1917, the fortress like building covers an entire city block in the South Loop of the Central Business District. Designed as the corporate headquarters of printing giant for R.R. Donnelley & Sons by architect Howard Von Doren Shaw it housed the printing presses to produce the Yellow Book and Sears Catalog. Boasting an elaborate Gothic architecture, the building has 14-foot ceilings and is built with 4,675 steel-reinforced columns supporting 10- to 12-inch-thick floors that can bear loads of 250 pounds per square foot. This strength was required to accommodate the enormous weight of reams of paper stored on upper floors. The floor loads allows the current tenants to house heavy equipment, such as transformers, on upper floors. The design also included a series of 21 vertical shafts, which allowed for the huge reams of newsprint to be lowered to the printing press floor. These shafts now serve as risers for fiber and power cabling. The industrial strength infrastructure includes four fiber vaults and three electric power feeds, which provide the building with more than 100 megawatts of power.
